GST Updates Effective from January 2026 Tax Period
1. Interest Computation in GSTR-3B Considering Electronic Cash Ledger Balance
From the January 2026 tax period onwards, interest in GSTR-3B shall be computed after giving credit for the minimum balance available in the taxpayer’s Electronic Cash Ledger, calculated from the due date of return filing up to the date of tax payment (offset). This change is in accordance with the proviso to Rule 88(1) of the CGST Rules, 2017.
The interest amount auto-populated in GSTR-3B will represent the minimum applicable interest and will be non-editable for any downward revision. Upward modification, if required, will be permitted.
2. Auto-Population of Tax Liability Break-up Table in GSTR-3B
The tax liability break-up table in GSTR-3B will auto-populate details of supplies pertaining to previous tax periods but reported in the current period. This will be based on the document dates of supplies declared in GSTR-1, GSTR-1A, or IFF relating to earlier tax periods.
This enhancement aims to facilitate accurate reporting of tax liabilities and ensure proper computation of interest in line with the proviso to Section 50 of the CGST Act, 2017.
3. Flexible Cross-Utilisation of Input Tax Credit (ITC)
From the January 2026 tax period onwards, once the available IGST ITC has been fully utilised, the GST Portal will allow payment of IGST liability in Table 6.1 of GSTR-3B using available CGST and SGST ITC in any order, providing greater flexibility in ITC utilisation.
4. Levy of Interest on Delayed Filing of Last GSTR-3B through GSTR-10
For cancelled taxpayers, where the last applicable GSTR-3B is filed after its due date, the interest on such delayed filing shall be levied and collected through the Final Return, i.e., GSTR-10.
